My story…
I had what I thought was a successful career over several years then all of a sudden, smack! I had hit a brick wall. All the things that I had done no longer worked. I was still working harder than my co-workers but I wasn’t getting the praise or attention I felt like I deserved.
Within two years, two direct supervisors that I had worked closely with left the company and neither time was I offered the role. I had done all the things I thoughts I was supposed to do. I gave 110%. I took work home. I was kind and nice to everyone. I held my head down and worked really hard.
When something like this happens you really begin to doubt yourself and your abilities. You start asking yourself questions like “Am I good enough?”, “Do I belong here?” or “Will I ever get a promotion?”. You get asked to work on special projects all the time. Your hard work is acknowledged on occasions but that never seems to translate into an increase in pay or title. You give your best every day, but it never feels like it’s good enough. Yet again I discovered, I was passed over for the same promotion that I knew I could do well.
That day everything changed for me. I developed a fire in the pit of my stomach that I would win and get what I wanted whatever it took. I had to reformulate my approach, my thinking, and my work to get what I wanted. I didn’t always know exactly what I was doing but I did know that I wasn’t getting the results I wanted.
The very next year the company I had been with for 16 years was sold and I found myself at a new company with a huge opportunity: I would be able to take all that I had learned from my previous company and on day one implement a plan of action to get me that job I wanted. Within 3 months I had been promoted from manager to director and one year later from director to vice president of a nationwide company with over 1000 employees.
Being able to achieve a dream job made me realize something…
Not everyone with the same talent and ambition understands what it takes to stand out from the crowd and get promoted. And that really unfortunate.
When my career ended with the 2nd company (through acquisition), I made a commitment that I would use whatever opportunity I had to help as many people as I could actualize the job and thus life they dream about.
So, I began to reflect and breakdown the critical keys I used to be promoted in three months from manager to director and one year later to vice president.
